Wedding Shoot at Villa del Balbianello: Lake Como Inspiration
I'll be honest about why Villa del Balbianello is my favourite romantic place on earth: Star Wars. This is where the Naboo lake-retreat scenes in Attack of the Clones were filmed, and I watched that film enough times growing up that some of it clearly never left me — every time I get to shoot a wedding or a session here, there's a small hit of nostalgia mixed in with the work.
There's a reason Villa del Balbianello shows up on nearly every list of the world's most beautiful wedding venues, and it isn't just the setting — it's that almost nothing about it can be rushed. You arrive by boat or on foot, there's no direct road access, and the villa's own conservation rules mean every session there is deliberate. That combination is exactly what makes it extraordinary to photograph: nothing about the day happens by accident.
This summer, I photographed a real couple here — no crew, no elaborate production, just the two of them and the villa doing most of the work. We also took a boat ride out on the lake, which I recommend to every couple shooting at Balbianello: not just for the photos it gives you on the water, but because arriving or leaving by boat is genuinely one of the most memorable parts of the day.
Why Balbianello Photographs the Way It Does
Balbianello sits on its own promontory on the western shore of the lake, and that geography does a lot of the visual work before a photographer even shows up. The loggia frames the water on three sides. The staircase down through the gardens gives genuine depth and layering that flat lakeside lawns don't. And because the villa is protected by FAI (Italy's national trust), the grounds are kept in a state few private venues can match — trimmed, historic, and never overrun with rental furniture or event infrastructure.
The trade-off is access. There's no car or coach route directly to the villa — you arrive by a short walk from Lenno or by private boat, which for a wedding is less an inconvenience than a genuinely cinematic opening scene.
Shooting in Summer Light
Como's wedding season runs roughly April through mid-October, and summer brings the longest window of usable light — but also the strongest midday sun, and this session was a good reminder of exactly why that matters. We shot around midday, when the sun sits high and hard, carving deep shadows under the eyes that no amount of good posing fixes on its own — so I brought in flash to fill those shadows rather than fight the sun outright. Then came the payoff: we caught sunset out on the boat, and that light was some of the most beautiful I've photographed on the lake all year — soft, warm, and completely different from the flat midday glare just a couple of hours earlier.

What a Real Wedding Day Here Actually Looks Like
Villa del Balbianello is managed by FAI, and access for private events and photography is genuinely limited compared to privately owned villas on the lake — which is exactly why couples who do secure it treat it as a career-highlight venue, not a default choice.
Stand-alone photo sessions (not tied to a full wedding buyout) run in the region of €1,200–€1,700 for 2026, subject to availability and FAI approval, and full wedding-day access requires its own booking process well in advance.
Because the villa also functions as a public heritage site with visiting hours, private sessions are typically scheduled around public access — meaning early morning or after-hours slots are often the most realistic for couples who want the grounds without a crowd of day visitors in the background.
Practical notes for couples considering Balbianello:
No direct car or coach access — arrival is by boat or a short walk from Lenno's lido
Access and photography permits are managed directly through FAI, and need to be secured well ahead of your date
Best light: early morning before the villa opens to visitors, or the last hour before sunset
Because of conservation rules, expect a more structured, less flexible timeline than a privately owned villa — which is worth knowing when you're building your wedding day schedule
Build a boat ride into your timeline if you can — it's a small addition that consistently produces some of the most memorable images and memories of the day
